Cataloguing Librarian

  • Inspire our community by shaping the collections at one of Melbourne's premier public library services.
  • Part-time ( 21 hours per week) fixed-term position based in the modern and spacious Hawthorn Library.
  • $84,770 - $98,205 Band 5 (pro rata to be applied) plus Superannuation

The Boroondara Library service is well-known for its extensive collection and resources which requires constant maintenance to keep up with the demands of the modern borrower. A little bit about the role

The Cataloguing Librarian keeps our adult collection up-to-date, and our customers engaged.  Reporting to the Collections and Reader Development Lead and the rostered Day Senior each shift, the role will be responsible for-

  • Developing, promoting, and continually assessing the collection to meet the recreational, cultural, information and education needs of the people of Boroondara.
  • Develop and maintain efficient and effective workflows associated with the acquisitioning, cataloguing and processing of library materials including working with shelf ready vendors to meet community needs.
  • Provide effective, professional readers advisory, reference, and information services to all library users.
  • Supervising workflow of Library Officers.
  • Following standard procedures for core library operations in areas such as opening and closing, daily rostering, cash handling, building and equipment maintenance, security and health and well-being.
  • Maintaining and developing professional awareness through reading of professional literature, attendance of professional meetings and seminars and participation in industry groups.

A little bit about you

You will have demonstrated library and customer service experience with a strong awareness of trends in literature and recreational reading.

With a constant view of keeping the customer at the centre of everything we do, you will have-

  • Demonstrated customer service skills and respect for diversity of ethnicity, gender, age, abilities, and skills.
  • Original and copy cataloguing experience and/or experience working with shelf ready vendors
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with both staff and the public, including the capacity to deal with conflict.
  • High level computing skills including the use of desktop and tablet computers, Microsoft Office, web tools and social media.
  • An aptitude for training staff and members of the public in the use of information tools and technology.
  • A Tertiary qualification in library and information science which confers eligibility for professional membership of the Australian Library and Information Association.
