Join Our Team: Library Assistant – Heritage Collection

Are you passionate about preserving local history and delivering exceptional library services? Mackay Regional Council is seeking a dedicated Library Assistant – Heritage Collection to support the development and delivery of heritage programs, collections, and services for our community.

This role is temporary until 30 June 2026, with the successful applicant required to work 7.25 hours on Mondays, Tuesdays & Wednesdays across an early/late roster.

As a Library Assistant, you’ll work closely with the Heritage Collection Supervisor to:

  • Support the development and upkeep of Heritage Collection resources, including handling information and photograph requests, curating in-house displays, acquiring local publications and donations, and coordinating tasks with the Friends of Mackay Libraries group.
  • Assist in planning, organising, and delivering programs and events tailored to Heritage Collection audiences.
  • Perform front-of-house library duties such as:
    • Managing the customer service desk, including lending, returns, reservations, and memberships.
    • Providing reference and information support, locating materials, and facilitating inter-library loans.
    • Helping customers use library equipment and technology.
  • Handle payments for library-related sales and services.
  • Contribute to strategic and operational planning and support implementation within your role.
  • Participate in reviewing and documenting current procedures, promoting continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate effectively within the team, supporting colleagues and contributing to a multi-skilled work environment.
  • Undertake other duties as directed by management, within the scope of the position.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Current QLD ‘C’ class driver’s licence
  • Working with Children Blue Card
  • Experience in customer service or library environments

Desirable

  • Certificate II or higher in Library and Information Studies

Skills & Knowledge

  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Basic communication skills both verbal and in writing.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office, and the use of general office equipment such as photocopiers, binding machines, document scanners.
  • Ability to learn how to use new technology and innovative practices.
  • Good knowledge of library policy and procedures.
  • Developing knowledge of the library’s collection and classification (Dewey Decimal) system.
  • Developing knowledge of the circulation module of the Library Management System.
  • Good knowledge of current affairs and the local community.
