The District Council of Yankalilla is seeking an enthusiastic and community-focused Library Officer – Children & Youth to join our Library Services team.

Working collaboratively with the Team Leader Library Services, you will play an important role in supporting community wellbeing by developing and delivering programs, events and activities that teach, inspire, inform and entertain children, young people and families in our community.

About the role

As the Library Officer – Children & Youth, you will provide a high-quality customer experience across our library services while taking a lead role in developing and delivering programs specifically designed for children and young people.

You will:

  • Develop and deliver an annual program of engaging children's and youth activities, including early literacy programs, STEAM activities,  school holiday programs and community outreach.
  • Build strong relationships with local schools, kindergartens and other community organisations and coordinate regular outreach opportunities.
  • Support statewide literacy initiatives, including programs such as Words Grow Minds.
  • Create safe, welcoming and inclusive library spaces where children, families and community members feel a sense of belonging.
  • Deliver engaging programs and activities that encourage literacy, creativity, curiosity, learning and participation.
  • Provide professional and friendly frontline customer service across the library and One Card Consortium environment.
  • Assist customers with library resources, information systems and services.
  • Support collection development, management and maintenance across a range of formats.
  • Promote the Library's collections, services, programs and activities through face-to-face, print and online channels.
  • Process library resources and transactions efficiently and accurately.
  • Assist with the training and support of new staff and volunteers.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of library services and programs.
  • Build positive relationships with Council staff, community groups, service providers, schools, families and the broader community.

About you

We are looking for someone who is creative, approachable, organised and genuinely passionate about working with children and families.

You will bring:

  • A tertiary qualification in library services, information management, community development or a related field, and/or demonstrated relevant experience in lieu of formal qualifications.
  • An understanding of early literacy, child development and learning theories.
  • Knowledge of contemporary public library operations and services.
  • A sound understanding of the role and purpose of public libraries within the community.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage positively with children, families, schools and community organisations.
  • Strong time management, organisation and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to work independently, use initiative and manage competing priorities.
  • A demonstrated commitment to innovation and continuous improvement.
  • The ability to work collaboratively as part of a dynamic, multi-skilled team.
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgement and discretion.
  • It would be advantageous if you also have:
  • Knowledge of the Early Years Learning Framework.
  • Previous experience working in a public library and/or Local Government environment.
  • Experience using Library Management Systems such as Symphony or SAPLN.
  • Experience developing and delivering children's, youth or early literacy programs.
  • Experience using Office 365 and other corporate technologies.
  • Experience with desktop publishing and/or image editing software.

** This position is required to work Wednesday/Thursday/Friday (9am-4pm) and every second Saturday (10am-1:30pm).**
